N’Golo Kanté did not play a single minute at the World Cup. Not one.
He was called up. He was put on the list. He traveled with the national team. And he stayed there, sitting, watching France compete without him.
He was not a filler player. He was the one who for years ran for ten, the one who won a World Cup in 2018 as the silent engine of it all, the one who never asked for the spotlight because the work was already reward enough.
Thierry Henry said it plainly: Kanté deserved respect.
That phrase hurts because it is accurate. It does not ask for glory or ovations. It asks for the bare minimum: respect. And he did not get it.
Deschamps made his decision. He did not use him. And no one who has seen Kanté give everything for that shirt for years can understand why.
Kanté does not shout. He never has. Nor did he complain. He left as he always lived on the pitch: quietly, without scandals, with that dignity that hurts more than any speech.
But what they did to him is unfair. And saying it out loud is the least he is owed.
There are ways to close a chapter. This was not one of them.
