Amar Bharati had an ordinary life. 🏦
He worked at a bank in New Delhi, was married, and was the father of three children. In 1970, he decided to leave everything behind to devote himself fully to spirituality, and in 1973 he did something that would change his body forever: he raised his right arm as an act of devotion to Shiva and a symbol of world peace, and vowed never to lower it again.
The first two years were pure agony. He couldn’t even rest at night because of the pain. But his body ended up adapting in the most extreme way possible: his arm lost sensation, the muscles atrophied, and the joints became permanently rigid.
Today, more than five decades later, he is still there, with his arm pointing toward the sky. For some, it is the ultimate proof of faith. For others, a mystery that is difficult to understand. His story has already inspired other ascetics to repeat the same sacrifice.
