She had a chronic phobia of trains… but when she saw a man fallen on the tracks, she didn’t hesitate and ran to save him

Karla Gama França was taking her children to school in Apucarana, Brazil, on the afternoon of June 3, 2026, when she suddenly saw something no one would want to see: a man lying on the train tracks. João Dakizuki, 55, had tripped and fallen right at the crossing. And in the distance, a locomotive was approaching with its horn blaring at full volume.

The problem is that Karla has had a lifelong phobia of trains. Not a passing scare, not discomfort — a real and chronic phobia that had been with her since childhood. But at that moment, fear did not win. She stopped the car, ran out, grabbed João, and dragged him off the tracks. The train passed exactly 8 seconds later. Security cameras recorded everything.

Some people face their fears after years of therapy, with time and preparation. Karla did it in the most unexpected instant, with a stranger in her arms and a locomotive bearing down on her. Sometimes courage doesn’t announce itself — it simply appears when someone else needs it.
