Lucas Trejo, 38, an Argentine defender for Club Sport Marítimo of La Guaira, was staying in Caracas with his team for the Copa Venezuela when the earth opened up on June 24. Two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck the country. His building, in Playa Grande, was reduced to rubble. Inside were his wife Yanina Maranella and his children Aarón and Ainhoa.

Trejo quit football that same night. He traded his boots for his own hands amid the concrete, searching for his family for 74 straight hours. He did not find them alive.

His sister Karen said that today he is sedated, in shock, completely alone in a country that is not his own. The club issued condolences — it also lost three young players from its youth divisions in the same tragedy. Karen is asking for only one thing: that someone from the family can arrive soon so he will not be left alone ⚽🙏
