Marcos Kitano Matsunaga, an executive at the food company Yoki, left his first wife to marry Elize Araújo, a woman he met while she was working as a high-end escort. They lived in an apartment in São Paulo, Brazil, surrounded by the money he had built over the years.
In 2012, everything fell apart. Elize discovered that Marcos was cheating on her, and that night the argument ended with a gunshot that took his life inside their own home. But what came next was what turned the case into one of Brazil’s most remembered: Elize dismembered her husband’s body and scattered the remains across different parts of the city, trying to make it seem as though he had simply disappeared.
For days, she kept up the charade, until she confessed and was convicted. The level of detail in the crime and both of their public profiles meant that the case was studied for years, and it eventually became the documentary series “Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime”.
