Thiago Viana sang forró for nothing, simply out of love for music.
For six years, he lived on the streets of Fortaleza, Brazil. He recycled cardboard and sold whatever he could to survive, but every night he had the chance, he went to Bar Miguel Arcanjo and asked to borrow the microphone during breaks in the performances. He sang forró hits as if the stage were his, even though no one around him imagined what would come next.
One ordinary night, a customer took out his cell phone and recorded the scene. Thiago did not even have a phone to find out what was happening: the next day, at the market where he worked, he heard people talking about an “internet hit”. His video had already surpassed 20 million views.
Local businesspeople offered him accommodation and professional support. Today, with a place to live and a recording studio waiting for him, Thiago is preparing his first album and has already performed his own song, ‘God Changed My Luck’, on national television. His luck, as the song says, really changed.
