Mikayla Booth had tickets to see Alex Warren in Brisbane, but one detail threatened to ruin everything.
Her boyfriend, Nyle McQuitty, is deaf, and there would be no Auslan interpreter available at the show. They also weren’t allowed to bring their own. Mikayla already knew Auslan and used it to communicate with Nyle, but interpreting a concert was different: it wasn’t just about communicating, but following the lyrics, rhythm, and meaning of each song in real time.
So she did what no one had asked her to do: in the days leading up to it, while driving her car, she began studying every song on the setlist and practicing the signs in secret, without Nyle knowing.
On the night of September 2, 2026, at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, among 13,000 people, she sang and interpreted song by song, including “Ordinary”.
Nyle only shifted his gaze between the stage and her. Sophie Williams, a stranger in the audience, filmed the scene without imagining that it would reach more than 32 million people.
