Luis Ferrer, whom everyone knows as “Grillo”, is 45 years old and owns a bakery in Plaza Matheu, Argentina. Every day he saw the same thing: neighborhood grandparents counting coin by coin so they could take home a little bread. It made his throat tighten.
He decided to act. He cut the price of bread in half for senior citizens. Now they pay less for the same quality. But it is not just bread; you can also get cookies for half price.
Grillo knows what it is like to struggle for a plate of food: he lived on the streets from the age of 12 until someone taught him the trade. Today, alongside his bakery, he runs a school where 25 vulnerable children learn to become bakers. And every night, between 7 and 9, he gives away all the leftover bread to anyone who needs it. “In this shop, what is left over is not thrown away”, he says. It is given away.
