Samantha Miller was 34 years old and had just gotten married when her celebration ended in tragedy.
On the night of April 28, 2023, the newlywed was riding with her husband, Aric Hutchinson, in a golf cart after their wedding in Folly Beach, South Carolina. Suddenly, a car struck them from behind at high speed.
Behind the wheel was Jamie Lee Komoroski, who was driving a rental vehicle after having been drinking.
Samantha died at the scene. Her husband survived, but suffered serious injuries. Komoroski had a blood alcohol level of 0.261%, more than three times South Carolina’s legal limit, and was later sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Now, more than three years after the tragedy, a call Komoroski made from jail to her father shortly after the accident has come to light.
Through tears, the young woman complained about what she was going through and even asked him: “Why did this happen to me?”
Her father’s response sparked strong reactions.
“Because bad things happen to good people, sweetheart”, he replied, trying to comfort her, before telling her that they had to face what happened together.
During the conversation, Komoroski also expressed fear about media coverage and what would happen when she regained her freedom. Her concern was focused on how she would be received by the public and how long she would have to remain incarcerated.
The call sparked outrage again because, while one family had lost a woman who had just begun her marriage, the conversation focused mainly on the suffering of the person who had caused the accident.
Komoroski ultimately pleaded guilty and received a 25-year sentence.
A wedding that was meant to mark the beginning of a life together ended with a woman dead, a husband seriously injured, and a young woman who would spend decades in prison.
Now, her own words from jail have once again put that tragedy at the center of the conversation.
