An extreme clinical case in Liaoning province in China raised medical alarms about the dangers of consuming food and drinks while intoxicated.

A 46-year-old patient surnamed Wang accidentally swallowed a 12-centimeter metal utensil during a dinner with excessive alcohol in 2018. The man refused an initial surgery out of fear and continued his routine, mistakenly attributing the physical discomfort to the side effects of chronic liquor consumption on his digestive system.

After his ability to swallow food worsened, surgeons at Dalian Municipal Central Hospital were forced to remove the object through the mouth to save the man’s life in a procedure that was successful.
