They told him no twice.
First it was James Bond. Sam Neill made it to the final auditions for “For Your Eyes Only” in 1981. He didn’t get it. They chose Roger Moore.
Then it was Indiana Jones. Spielberg considered him. Not that either. They chose Harrison Ford.
Two rejections that changed Hollywood without him knowing it yet.
Because eleven years later, that same Spielberg who had passed on him called him for something bigger than any spy or archaeologist. He offered him the chance to stand before a Tyrannosaurus Rex with the most ambitious film budget of that era.
Sam Neill stood there. And he didn’t move.
Dr. Alan Grant looked out over the horizon of Isla Nublar, and we looked with him. You can’t learn that. You either have it or you don’t.
He was born in Northern Ireland, grew up in New Zealand, and lived among vineyards and film sets as if he didn’t have to choose between the two.
In 2022, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. He announced it without drama, almost with the same calm Dr. Grant used to study tracks in dry earth.
The rejections built the man cinema needed.
Rest in peace, Sam. ![]()
