It was Monday night in the Bañado Norte neighborhood of Corrientes, and the band ‘Yeison y el After’ was playing cumbia on an improvised stage on the sidewalk. A 15th birthday party, with legal permits, music in the street, people dancing. Nothing different from any other weekend.
Until a neighbor, tired of the volume, appeared at his window with an air rifle. The shot struck the singer, Esteban de Jesús Vallejos, directly in the forehead. They had to operate on him urgently at Hospital Escuela to remove the pellet embedded in his skull. Another band that had played earlier and a young woman were also shot that same night.
The neighbors already knew the attacker: he had a history of fights over noise complaints in the area. No one fired in self-defense or because of a real threat. It was because of music. How much is someone’s life worth today compared with a neighbor’s annoyance?
