Dr. James MacLean, from Ontario, authorized the assisted death of Thomas Dillon, a 45-year-old patient with Crohn’s disease and depression. According to the investigation, the two exchanged dozens of messages after meeting outside a Tim Hortons restaurant, and months later the doctor himself drove him to the funeral facility where he received the lethal injection.

Everything got worse when another case linked to the same doctor emerged. A patient started breathing again after having been declared dead, allegedly because one of the medications in the protocol was missing.

Although the scandal exploded across the country, the doctor did not lose his license. He was only placed under strict supervision for several months. This case opened a fierce debate about the limits of the medical system.
