It was July 2018, and Henry Cavill was promoting Mission: Impossible – Fallout when GQ Australia asked him about #MeToo and modern dating. His response quickly went viral: he said he admired “a man pursuing a woman”, that she “should be courted”, and concluded by admitting that perhaps he was old-fashioned for thinking so. 🙊

He also confessed that he now hesitated before flirting, for fear of being “thrown into the fires of hell” on social media. Criticism came immediately: many accused him of not understanding the times he lived in, while others applauded his honesty about how difficult it is to win someone over today.

The actor ended up issuing a public apology, clarifying that he supported gender equality and regretting any comments that sounded insensitive. One interview, one phrase, and a debate that remains open about what romance is supposed to look like today. 💬
