Eldiara Doucette lost an arm due to a rare form of cancer. Instead of remaining silent about that loss, she decided to hold a funeral for it. She invited family and friends to say goodbye to that limb as if it were someone else, in what she herself described as a deeply healing experience.

In a heartfelt message, she reflected on everything that arm had allowed her to do over the years: hold the hands of the people she loves, comfort others, rescue spiders and worms, pet dogs, pick flowers, and play instruments she will no longer be able to play.

For a long time, she joked that her arm “was trying to kill her”. But in the end, she came to understand something different: it was not the enemy, but another victim of the illness, one that had made “the ultimate sacrifice” so that she could keep living.
