Betsy Ayala had a six-month-old baby when her world fell apart in a Facebook message.

There, her longtime husband told his mistress that she was a “cow”. Betsy, from Houston, Texas, weighed 119 kilos at the time, the result of a difficult pregnancy, severe postpartum depression, and years of anxiety she had carried since childhood, when school bullying drove her to eat as a refuge.

Instead of staying there, she cried after every workout and decided that pain wasn’t going to define her. She swapped sweets for smoothies, started dancing zumba with her sister, and ended up lifting weights six days a week. Today she weighs 72 kilos, is a marketing director, and says something surprising: that her ex-husband’s infidelity was, unintentionally, the blessing she needed to be born again.
