Sutton Coldfield, England, March 4, 2016. Natalie Queiroz was walking along Trinity Hill, 37 weeks pregnant, when her then-partner, Babur Karamat Raja, attacked her with a kitchen knife. There were 24 stab wounds to her heart, lung, liver, and uterus, over nearly nine minutes. One of the wounds came just 2 millimeters from her unborn daughter.
Three passersby, John Mitchell, Anthony Smith, and Callum Gibson, managed to wrest the weapon away from him. An air ambulance helicopter landed in the middle of the street to take her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Natalie arrived in critical condition and, still in a coma, her daughter was born by cesarean section that same night. Both survived against all odds.
Raja was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Natalie, with limited use of one hand, completed an obstacle course and a rappelling descent for the air ambulance organization that saved her life, and today she works alongside British police to prevent knife violence.
