Bobby Dewbre was crossing the street to catch a safe ride when a repeat drunk-driving offender killed him. It was his 21st birthday, and he was celebrating with friends in Montana.

Today, his mother, Beth McBride, and his sister, Carli Seymour, drive around the Flathead Valley every weekend looking for cars that have been left outside bars all night. They leave each one a note with Bobby’s photo, the story of how he died, and a $5 coffee gift card. It’s their way of thanking whoever chose not to drive drunk.

The idea started when Carli, who worked as a barista, saw cars covered in frost in a parking lot and wanted to thank their owners. They now have 75 volunteers in the valley, 309 people signed up, and groups in Oregon, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. Several people have written to say the note made them think and that they promised never to drive drunk again.
