Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird, known for the reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, has taken her dispute with a private school in Georgia to a new level: she is now considering legal action after the institution withdrew her 8-year-old daughter’s spot because of her social media activity.
According to Efird, the school knew about her presence on social media, and she had been moving forward with Ella Grace’s admissions process for weeks. She had spoken several times with the admissions team, visited the facilities, and paid the corresponding fees. She was even prepared to spend close to US$10.000 during the school year.
But during a meeting, administrators reportedly told her that her social media activity “was not aligned” with the school’s values. The institution offered to refund her money.
Pumpkin says what bothered her most was not that the school had a different stance from hers, but that no one warned her before she completed the entire admissions process.
“She deserved better”, she said, after explaining that her daughter was waiting outside the office, unaware that she was being rejected because of her mother’s activity.
Efird is now considering suing the school and has decided that Ella will continue her studies through homeschooling, with a private tutor. So far, no lawsuit has been filed.
The case reopens an uncomfortable question: how far can a parent’s professional decisions affect their children’s opportunities?
