Krystal Davis was 7 years old and was reading aloud in front of the president of the United States.
It was the morning of September 11, 2001, at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. George W. Bush was listening to teacher Sandra Daniels’s students when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, approached and whispered in his ear: The United States is under attack. No one in the room knew what had just happened in New York, but Krystal did notice something different in the face of the most powerful man in the country. “You could see it on his face”, she recalled 25 years later.
The children continued with the lesson without understanding why the president had become so serious. Today, as adults, former students such as Krystal and Stevenson Tose’-Rigell, son of the school’s director at the time, reconstruct that exact minute when the history of the world changed before their seven-year-old eyes.
