In October 2023, Wyatt Torres, seven, was told to prepare to spend a few days at the hospital in Brownfield, Texas, but those days turned into a month.
He’s just a normal seven-year-old boy who had very, very bad luck and is dealing with everything life has thrown at him,” his father, Luis Torres, said.
The biopsy on October 18 confirmed acute myeloid leukemia. Three rounds of chemotherapy followed. Then came four months in Fort Worth to recover from a bone marrow transplant.
It worked. Wyatt went into remission, but nearly a year later, his test results were abnormal again.
A new biopsy revealed that the leukemia had returned, but this time, despite intensive chemotherapy sessions and medication, his white blood cell count wasn’t improving.

That was when the family received some difficult news: they could stay and try more chemotherapy; however, the doctors thought a transplant would do him more harm than good. The other option was to go home…
The family didn’t know what to do, and that was when Wyatt decided to have the final say. He was only 7 years old, but he wanted to go home and rest.
Everyone knew that would end his life. Still, they decided to respect his decision. He had already endured so much pain, and they didn’t want to ask him to keep fighting.
The next day, Make-A-Wish called, and they decided to give Wyatt one last moment of joy by taking him to Disneyland.

The little boy lived for six more months. He left this world on August 15, 2025, shortly after turning 8.
Sometimes, a child’s final decision is also their greatest gift.
