Lucas Trejo, a 38-year-old defender from Córdoba who plays for Club Sport Marítimo in La Guaira, was with his team in Caracas when two earthquakes of up to 7.5 shook Venezuela on June 25, 2026. While he was playing in the Copa Venezuela, the Cumanagotto building in Playa Grande — where his wife Yanina Maranella and his children Aarón (7) and Ainhoa (5) lived — collapsed completely.
Trejo posted a desperate plea for help on Instagram with a photo of his family and began removing rubble with his own hands. His brother-in-law Ricardo Ardiles summed it up bluntly: “The building no longer exists.” The lack of electricity and signal in La Guaira makes it almost impossible to know whether they managed to get out in time. There is a small hope: little Aarón was practicing football at a school when the quake struck, which could mean he was not at home.
His teammates in Venezuelan football did not hesitate for a second and joined the search. Argentina’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement of solidarity, although Argentina has had no diplomatic presence in Venezuela since 2024. The football world is holding its breath. 🙏
