“Thinking Out Loud” became one of Ed Sheeran’s biggest hits, but behind the song is a story that ended up changing the life of one of his best friends as well.
Amy Wadge had known Ed since he was 17, and the two had been writing songs together for some time. Years later, when she was going through financial difficulties, she went to his house in Suffolk hoping that Ed would include an old song they had written together on his next album so she could receive some royalties and pay her bills.
While Ed was in the shower, Amy picked up a guitar and began playing a melody. He heard her from upstairs, came down, and they started working together. In about 20 minutes, they had created “Thinking Out Loud”.
The song went on to conquer the world, selling millions of copies and winning the Grammy for Song of the Year. As a co-writer, Amy also received the royalties from that huge hit.
Ed later summed up what the song had meant for his friend: “Now she never has to worry about money” ❤️.
