Her mother asked her to marry a rich man, and Cher replied with 7 words: “Mom, I am a rich man”
Cher was 10 months old when her parents divorced. She was raised by Georgia Holt, a club singer, and grew up amid money problems and unstable relationships. Holt married and divorced six more times. Given that history, her idea of a secure future for her daughter was what many women of her generation had been taught: marry well.
So one day she told Cher she should settle down and marry a rich man. The singer, who already had a huge career by the mid-90s, replied without hesitation: “Mom, I am a rich man”. Then she drove the point home in an interview: she didn’t have to marry one.
It wasn’t an act. It was the answer of someone who had built her own safety net through records, television, film, and an Oscar.
Georgia Holt died in 2022, at the age of 96, and Cher had paid tribute to her in the documentary “Dear Mom, Love Cher”.
