Today we remember a dark episode in the AFC Champions League that turns eleven years old: on May 6, 2015, Uruguayan Fabián “Lolo” Estoyanoff was involved in one of the most remembered assaults in modern football. After his team, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr, lost 3-1 to Qatar’s Lekhwiya, his frustration triggered a violent and unexpected attack in the tunnel.

The target of the Uruguayan’s fury was South Korean Nam Tae-hee, who had been the standout player of the match after scoring a goal and winning a decisive penalty. Without a word, and taking advantage of the fact that his opponent had his back turned, Estoyanoff blocked him in the corridor and landed several punches on him. Stadium security had to intervene immediately to stop the beating, to the astonishment of those present.

The consequences for the attacker were severe and set a disciplinary precedent both at his team and in the confederation. The AFC imposed a six-match suspension and a $10,000 fine on him, while Al-Nassr cut 50% of his salary. This event was recorded as an anniversary of what must never be allowed on an international playing field.
