152 black cats. That was the number of felines their owners brought to Los Angeles with a single hope: that their furry star would land a role in Hollywood. 🐱

The casting call was for an anthology film based on four texts by Edgar Allan Poe, starring Vincent Price. One of the segments was none other than “The Black Cat”, and the production team organized a massive casting call that was immortalized in a photograph by photographer Ralph Crane: an endless line of black cats and their owners, all sharing the same dream. What no one in that line knew was that the starring cat had already been chosen in advance. Of the 152 participants, only 7 landed a small role as extras. 🎬

There is something deeply endearing about imagining that scene: dozens of people convinced that their cat was the right one, waiting their turn under the Los Angeles sun. Feline stardom already had an owner before it even began, but that did not take any of the magic away from the day. 🖤
