A hospital in Chile, in the town of Quillota, issued an alert after detecting social media posts in which people were offering to sell breast milk. Although for many it might seem like a harmless alternative, specialists warned that consuming milk from an unknown source can pose serious health risks to babies.
Dr. Macarena Jordán, head of Neonatology at the facility, explained that breast milk obtained outside regulated channels can transmit viruses such as HIV, cytomegalovirus, and even HTLV, associated with certain types of leukemia. In addition, she noted that there is also a risk of contamination or improper storage.
