When the doctor said the word HPV, the room filled with fear. They thought the worst. But the girl had never had sexual contact, and that is where the diagnosis becomes a lesson: it is Focal Epithelial Hyperplasia, or Heck’s disease, caused by subtypes 13 and 32 of the virus, low-risk strains that do not cause cancer.
The infection did not come from abuse or a secret. It came from a shared glass, a toy, a goodnight kiss. HPV has more than 200 variants, and in young children it often enters through small wounds in the mouth during everyday play. 👧
It is not a sexually transmitted infection, and saying so clearly is also a way of protecting this girl from a stigma that does not belong to her.
