That gesture was enough for the internet to draw conclusions about an entire continent.
In the video, a young woman appears covering her nose while riding the subway, and the scene quickly became associated with one of those stereotypes that have been circulating on social media for years: that Europeans bathe less.
But the reality is far less simple. Europe comprises dozens of countries with very different customs, and surveys show significant differences even between neighboring countries. In the United Kingdom, for example, nearly half of people say they shower daily, while in Spain the frequency tends to be higher.
The climate, age, routine, and even culture influence how many times someone showers during the week, so talking about “Europeans” as if they all had the same habits is ultimately quite imprecise.
That said, every so often a scene like this appears and the debate starts all over again as if it had never gone away.
Europe may have many differences, but the internet seems to have one question left: “but how often do they bathe?”.
