Olivia Downs is 22 years old and already knew what she wanted: to never have children.
She went to her doctor in Australia and asked for something simple in theory: to have her tubes tied. The response was not a risk assessment or a second specialized opinion. It was a sentence Olivia couldn’t get out of her head: “You might meet the right man and change your mind”. No diagnosis, no medical condition involved. Just the assumption that a future man could rewrite what she had already decided about her own body.
Olivia recorded the moment and uploaded it to TikTok. The video filled up with women recounting the same scene, in different countries, with different doctors, but with the same phrase repeated almost word for word. None of them asked for permission to have children. Olivia was asked to wait for a man who doesn’t even exist.
