Haroqs, a 26-year-old Malaysian activist, wanted the children of Gaza to receive chocolates. The problem: he was in the middle of the sea, aboard one of the boats in the Global Sumud flotilla, and he couldn’t think of any other way to deliver them than by throwing them into the water.
After the video went viral, he apologized on Threads with a phrase that says it all: “I understand that I’m not a very intelligent person. I simply had no other way to transport the chocolates to the children.” Before the controversy, he had posted a photo of his “emergency bag full of chocolates” and assured that, no matter what happened, his sweets were safe.
Haroqs had already taken part in a previous flotilla mission in October 2025, when the boat was intercepted. By May 19 he was still on board, being one of the 4 Malaysians among the 10 vessels of GSF 2.0 that continue their journey toward Gaza. The intentions, intact. The chocolates, at the bottom of the sea. 🍫
