With that, she buys a plate of food. It isn’t much, and she knows it. But when asked how she felt about it, she didn’t talk about deprivation or what she lacked. She spoke of gratitude. She said, with a simplicity that disarmed anyone who heard her, that she was very grateful to her parents.
