“I came to the Malecón to see the tsunami.” That was the response —completely serious— that a Dominican citizen gave when asked what he was doing on the Santo Domingo Malecón during the tsunami alert issued after the strong earthquake in Venezuela.

While most people seek shelter in the face of a warning like that, this man went in exactly the opposite direction: he walked to the seashore to see if anything would arrive. The alert has already been lifted in the Dominican Republic and, spoiler, the tsunami never showed up. But the phrase definitely stuck around.

And yes, many other Dominicans were also there that night, calmly enjoying the Malecón. Because in the end, bravery —or curiosity— has no explanation.
