Anne Hathaway couldn’t hold back her tears.

She was on the D23 stage, surrounded by applause, when she heard the words that officially made her a ‘Disney Legend.’ It was only a moment, but it was enough to remind her of the young woman who, twenty years earlier, arrived on screen dressed as a princess without knowing that film would change her life forever.

The curious thing is that this recognition comes just as criticism over her pregnancy kept circulating on social media. But there she was, not hiding, letting emotion take over. ‘The Princess Diaries’ launched her to stardom in 2001, and today, with a career full of memorable characters, Disney returns the favor with the most symbolic title the company has.

Sometimes recognition doesn’t erase criticism, but it does remind you who you really are.
