That’s how direct Amy Schumer was in Growing, her Netflix special recorded in Chicago in 2019, when she was pregnant with her first child.
Nothing about a radiant belly or cute cravings. Schumer, 37, talked about hyperemesis gravidarum, nausea that wouldn’t leave her alone, and vomiting she lost count of. She even canceled a tour because of how awful she felt, and onstage she hid nothing: not the hemorrhoids, the infections, or the exhaustion no one had warned her about.
In the middle of the laughs, she also dropped a confession no one expected: her husband, chef Chris Fischer, is on the autism spectrum. Between the dark humor and uncomfortable honesty, Schumer ended up portraying pregnancy as it really is for many women: less picture-perfect, more battle.
