In 2020, Adelle Overton woke up while her partner, Steven Uden, was raping her. She was receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer; he cared for her after Ehlers-Danlos syndrome forced her to leave work. Uden said he thought she was awake, and Overton dismissed her suspicions.

In 2025, Uden confessed while receiving treatment for an intestinal tumor. Police said he admitted raping her during chemotherapy, when she was medicated. He pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison.

Overton shared what happened so that other vulnerable people would know they shouldn’t tolerate abuse from those who care for them. “I thought I owed him that intimacy. But I didn’t. And no one else owes him that either”, she said.
