Inocente Medrano Sánchez is 68 years old and has a cart.
Every morning, he walks the streets of Tlalpan, Mexico City, with gelatin desserts and flans he makes himself. Alongside him walks Nacho, a mixed-breed dog he found abandoned on the street, who now never leaves his side. In the afternoon, the two set up at a gas station on Periférico Sur, in the Carrasco area, where he sets up his stand beneath a homemade sign that reads “Desserts and Gelatin Treats: Grandpa and His Faithful Friend”.
Someone photographed his routine and posted it on social media. Within minutes, the story was filled with people offering money, as if it were a handout. Inocente did not let it go. He recorded a video to clarify it in his own words: “What they are posting is not true. I’m not asking for handouts; I’m asking you to buy”.
He does not want anyone to give him anything. He wants them to buy what he makes with his own hands, early, every day, while Nacho waits lying down beside the cart until it is time to go home.
