Esther Jiménez lost her left eye and underwent 27 surgeries after acid was thrown in her face. More than two decades have passed since that attack, and she still says she would not wish it on even the person who caused her so much harm.

But this week, the Dominican Republic saw her smile differently. With her eyebrows and lips retouched, Esther wrote: “I feel like a 15-year-old girl”. She said that she used to wear temporary eyebrows that would come loose after three days, and that now, thanks to esthetician Raquel, she feels comfortable and confident in a way she had not felt in years.

Today, at 34, Esther has turned her pain into a community that follows her on Instagram seeking hope. The court case over the attack remains open, but while justice moves slowly, she chose to move forward first: “If you want to get something cosmetic done, do it to feel the way I do”, she told her followers.
