Mar Vázquez is 61 years old and has made a decision few would understand.
A former Civil Guard officer and world runner-up in the men’s military marathon before transitioning, she began her transition at 57 and underwent six surgeries. Her testosterone level today is 0.07, almost negligible. And yet she chose, of her own free will, to continue competing in the men’s category.
“I think competing against women is unfair”, she explained after taking bronze in the 3.000 meters at the Campeonato Gallego de Ourense, with a time of 11:23.94 that also earned her qualification for the Spanish Masters Championship in Antequera. She has a wife, two children, and five grandchildren who accompany her in every race 🏅
