“I got sober at 29 and have been sober for 22 years. I’ve been very lucky”

At 29, Bradley Cooper decided to stop.

There was no dramatic rescue or last-minute intervention: just a man who realized he was lost and that the only way out was to quit everything cold turkey. He gave up alcohol and drugs at a time when his career was just beginning to take off, with no guarantee that the change would work.

Today, more than two decades later, Cooper has 22 years of continuous sobriety. He sums it up without dramatics: he feels “incredibly lucky” to have gotten out of it. His case demonstrates something that is rarely told with such clear numbers: addiction can affect anyone, even someone who seems to have it all, and overcoming it is possible without it defining the rest of a person’s life.
