“I hated my body. I hated myself”: one of her legs came to weigh 16 kilos because it took 32 years to diagnose a disease

Amy Rivera spent 32 years hearing the same wrong explanation.

She was born with her left leg twice the size of her right, and doctors told her mother it was because of the way she had carried her in the womb. A lie her mother carried with guilt for decades. Her family knocked on doors for years and, after so many doors were slammed in their faces, eventually gave up. Meanwhile, the fluid trapped in her leg reached 16 kilos and seeped through her skin.

At school and on the street, they called her “the girl with the elephant leg”. Amy hid her leg under skirts and long dresses and avoided looking in the mirror: “I hated myself”, she says. At last, she got a diagnosis: lymphedema, a progressive condition that, without treatment, can be fatal in severe cases.

Today, at 42, after three surgeries, Amy no longer hides anything. She wrote a book, competes in bodybuilding, and gives talks to doctors and students. And she continues to fight so that insurance companies and the healthcare system understand that this is not a cosmetic issue. How many more people are still waiting for a diagnosis no one gives them?
