At 68, in an interview with AARP The Magazine, the British actress was direct: “I never felt the need to have a child, and I never felt that loss. I always put my work before anything else”. Back in 2007, she had said something similar: that she had “no maternal instinct whatsoever”.
Her love story did not follow the expected script either. She was in a relationship with director Taylor Hackford for 12 years before marrying him in 1997, and she came to describe marriage as a “voluntary prison”. But when she spoke about him, she saw it differently: she believed they had found each other at exactly the right time, neither before nor after. 💍
Mirren built her life her own way, without asking permission or justifying herself. And she continues to make people talk because of it.
