Hayden Panettiere was 36 years old and had a phrase that can no longer be read the same way.
It was May 26, at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold Theater, presenting her memoir ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’. There, in front of an audience that had no idea what was to come, she said she hoped to “leave the world a better place than I found it”. She spoke of strength and vulnerability, her addiction, the postpartum depression she experienced as a mother, and her dream of becoming a director to create safe spaces for other actors.
Less than three months later, on Sunday, August 16, someone found her in cardiac arrest at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina. They called 911, the paramedics tried to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 in the afternoon. The exact cause of her death remains under investigation. Her father, Alan ‘Skip’ Panettiere, said goodbye to her by calling her ‘an incomparable light’. Hayden already knew the weight of losing a sibling: Jansen died in 2023, at 28. Now her own words, spoken without knowing they would be almost the last, read like a message she deliberately left behind.
