Two mortadella sandwiches with cheese and a cola soda. That was all a young man from La Rioja, Argentina, could put on the table to welcome his girlfriend’s parents for the first time in January 2022. He did it with what he had: he worked cutting grass while also studying at university. There was no money for more, but there was a desire to make a good impression. 💪
The girlfriend saw a photo of the menu before the meeting and didn’t even wait to arrive. Right then and there, she ended the relationship. The young man told the story anonymously to local journalist Pedro Nicolás Juárez, who published it on his Facebook fanpage. The phrase he used says it all: “They left me for being poor”. And he added something even more painful: if he had told her about his financial situation from the beginning, the relationship would never have started. 😔
Social media was quick to react. Thousands of people came out to defend the young man and harshly question his ex’s attitude. Because the question that lingered is uncomfortable: what does it say about a person to abandon someone over a sandwich? 🤔
