Eminem once woke up in a hospital with tubes all over his body, not knowing what had happened to him.
That was just rock bottom. From the late 90s through 2008, he was dependent on Vicodin, Valium, Ambien, and Xanax, until his tolerance led to an overdose. What made him change was not the fear of dying, but missing his daughter Hailie’s birthday. He cried when he realized it and promised himself he would never fail her, Alaina, or Stevie again.
On April 20, he shared a photo on Instagram holding a coin with the number 18 engraved in Roman numerals, celebrating 18 years of sobriety. He no longer hides that past: he says he stopped being ashamed of it and now treats sobriety as his superpower, something he feels deeply proud of.
