30-year-old Tom Holland said it bluntly: he couldn’t control how much he was drinking, and it was starting to cost him everything.
On the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the British actor said that his first year without alcohol was the hardest thing he had ever faced, more difficult than any stunt scene like Spider-Man. It started with a Christmas break that kept extending month by month, until his birthday arrived in June and he realized he had crossed the line into true sobriety.
The curious thing is what came out of that struggle: he founded Bero, a non-alcoholic beer, after noticing that there were almost no options in bars for people who decided not to drink. His partner, Zendaya, who has never tried alcohol, was the direct inspiration behind the product. Today, as he prepares for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland says that this version of himself is completely different from the one who started the saga.
