Verónica Acosta was expecting to receive a modest government subsidy of just $7 in her virtual wallet account, but due to a system error her account showed up that morning with more than $480 thousand deposited, an astronomical figure that gave her the certainty that it was a divine miracle, and in less than 24 hours she made 66 transactions to spend all the money that, according to her explanation, God had sent her.
Her shopping list included a brand-new car, household appliances, construction materials, and a series of items that left authorities speechless when they began investigating the case, because the woman not only spent the money but also transferred part of it to several relatives, who also allegedly took part in moving the funds before the government detected the error.
The government quickly noticed the irregularity and launched an investigation that made it possible to freeze the accounts and trace each of the 66 transactions Acosta made in less than a day, managing to recover more than 90% of the money, although the woman had already spent a significant part of it on goods that she will now have to return.
