On June 24, 2026, Lucas Trejo was training in Caracas when a double earthquake brought down the building in Playa Grande where his wife Yanina and his two children, 7-year-old Aarón and 5-year-old Ainhoa, lived.
He was focused with his team for a match. They were alone in the family apartment.
When he learned what had happened, he ran toward La Guaira, 18 miles from the capital.
What he found was, in the words of his brother-in-law, “a horrible scene”. Absolutely nothing remained of the building.
Trejo tried to lift the rubble with his own hands. He clung to one possibility: at that time, his children were usually at training. Maybe they were not inside.
They were.
After three days of searching, they found the lifeless bodies of Yanina, Aarón, and Ainhoa.
One month later, Lucas opened his Instagram and wrote a letter. Not to cry in public. To say something more difficult than pain.
“A month ago, I had to live through the worst moment of my life. The only thing that terrified me, losing my family. I had to search for my wife and my two children in a completely collapsed building, knowing they were already lifeless.”
And yet, he carried on.
“I decided to do it through faith, believing they could be alive.”
He thanked those who stood by him during the first 72 hours: “God sent you to wrap me in comfort and hold me up. Without you, I would not have been able to endure so much pain. I was never alone.”
And at the end of the letter, he wrote something no one expected.
“Their lives will not be in vain. What we began together with my wife Yanina and my children Aaron and Ainhoa will continue. See you soon Venezuela.”
A man who lost everything promised to return to the place where he lost it.
That is not called recovering. That is called loving without condition.
