“I took steps so I wouldn’t have to do that again. I weighed almost 180 kilos. I was binge-eating after I quit drinking”

John Goodman is 1.88 meters tall and once weighed nearly 180 kilos.

The Roseanne and The Big Lebowski actor didn’t succeed on the first try. His trainer, Mackie Shilstone, said that before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Goodman had already lost 39 kilos with his help. After the storm, he gained it all back. He himself told David Letterman that every spring, after wrapping up filming Roseanne, he’d lose 27 kilos and then gain them back—and then some.

The real change came in 2007, when he quit drinking. In 2010, he told People that he had already lost about 45 kilos: he worked out six days a week and had cut out sugar. He was blunt about his earlier days: “It was a waste”, a waste of time and energy.

According to People, he now maintains his weight with a Mediterranean-style eating plan, daily walks, and boxing with focus mitts and heavy bags. In 2016, he summed it up this way: “I just stopped eating all the time”.

In July 2025, he arrived at the Smurfs premiere in Los Angeles at 73, with the 90 kilos he had lost plain for all to see. More than a decade after that first decision, John Goodman’s body still tells the story: sometimes you don’t need a new diet, but to start over again and again.
