Cindy Mathis was cleaning out her car’s trunk when she found a pile of letters.

They were a birthday gift from her daughter Macy, 16, who had given them to her earlier that year, and Cindy had kept them. Macy had died on November 25, 2016, five days after a car accident with her boyfriend in Tifton, Georgia. Only a few weeks had passed.

Each letter had an instruction on the envelope. One said “Open when you miss me”: “I know you miss me. I probably miss you too. I’ll always love you, Mom”. Another, for sleepless nights, invited her to climb into her bed: “I’ll be your little girl again so you can find comfort and sleep”.

Among Macy’s things was also a note from her boyfriend, Adam Sattler, who also died in the accident: “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you”. Cindy shared everything online. She says those words gave her the comfort she had been seeking for weeks.
